The first tune, also known as ‘Morrison’s,’ was recorded at least as far back as 1935. 'Miss McGuinness’ was recorded by Michael Colman on a 78 rpm, also in the 1930’s. ‘The Reel of Sceach’ was written by County Offaly flute player John Brady, and it is also known by the name of ‘Siobhan O’Donnell’s.’ In the Irish language, the word sceach refers to the
hawthorn or whitethorn tree, the branches of which were often used in Ireland to discipline naughty children.
